Pending a passed physical today, Devin Ebanks will re-sign with the Lakers according to Mark Medina of the L.A. Times.

Ebanks originally accepted the Lakers offer of a one-year deal worth a little over $1 million in July, but did not sign the contract. It was a smart move by Ebanks and his agent, David Bauman. By not signing in July, Ebanks was able to keep his name out of any trade discussions.

Last season, the Lakers made different proposals to Orlando in an effort to land Dwight Howard. Ebanks name popped up as someone the Orlando Magic might want in such a trade. Howard remained a member of the Magic after the trade deadline and played out the season with the team.

In July, rumors began to swirl of the Lakers renewed interest in Howard. Ebanks knew that if he were under contract, he could be thrown in on such a deal. Last week, the Lakers landed Howard in a huge four-team deal. With that issue resolved, the Lakers now look to strengthen their bench, and Ebanks is someone they want for that role.

“Ebanks feels they know him now and what he’s capable of and can contribute,” Bauman said  Sunday evening. “He’s going to be given a chance to get a role on the team.”

Ebanks averaged 4.0 points and 2.3 rebounds per game with the Lakers last season. He started 12 games for the Lakers during the regular season and 6 games during the Playoffs with Metta World Peace suspended for elbowing James Harden.
