We told you on Monday about J.T. Thomas getting reps with the starting linebackers during practice. After a strong performance in the Bears’ first Preseason game against the Broncos, Thomas practiced as the first-team strongside linebacker with Brian Urlacher and Geno Hayes missing practice.
Urlacher is out for the rest of the Preseason after having his knee scoped on Tuesday. Starting strongside LB Nick Roach will slide over and start for Urlacher, while Geno Hayes will take the open starting spot at LB. Even with Geno Hayes coming back, Thomas will see the field more on defense.
Another area where Thomas will continue to be featured is on special teams. He played in all four phases of special teams last week, and with Dom DiCicco out with a partially torn groin muscle, Thomas will step into his role as a leader on special teams.
Thomas has left Bears’ special teams coordinator Dave Toub impressed during training camp.
“J.T. is coming on a lot better than last year,” Toub said. “He has really matured and he is taking my end of it, the special teams, a lot more seriously. You can see it on the field. He is going to have the next three games before Dom gets back to show what he can do.”
The Bears play Washington on Saturday night. We will have a full preview of that game and other games involving former Mountaineers this weekend on Saturday morning.
