After a week off, we are back with a recap of how Mountaineers in the NFL played during Week 5.
Before the Week 5 slate of games began on Sunday afternoon, we wondered who would be faster: Cam Newton or Bruce Irvin.
The question was answered early in the 2nd quarter when Irvin tracked Newton down in the Carolina backfield for a sack (you can watch that video by going here). Irvin had applied pressure on Newton in an earlier series, forcing Newton to throw an incompletion. He had another hit on Newton near the 2-minute-warning before halftime.
Then, with less than a minute left in the game, the Panthers tried to drive down the field for a winning score, Irvin got to Newton again with a strip-sack effectively sealing the win for the Seahawks (you can get to that video here).
He caused problems for the Panthers’ offensive line throughout the day, often finding himself deep in the backfield.
Irvin leads all NFL rookies in sacks with 4.5. He finished the day with two sacks, one forced fumble and two QB hits.
Mundy has been a spot starter for the Steelers this season, alternately filling in for Ryan Clark and Troy Polamalu. On Sunday against cross-state rival Philadelphia, Polamalu re-aggravated a calf injury causing him to leave the game. Mundy filled in for the All-Pro, racking up six tackles in the Steelers last-second victory over the Eagles.
Adam “Pacman” Jones
Jones had a big pass breakup for the Bengals on a third down and had one tackle in the game against Miami. He also had 2 punt returns for a 12.5 yard average.
The Colts won a tough game against Don Barclay and the Packers on Sunday. He had 5 punts for a 44.6 yard average landing two inside the 20-yard line.
The Sunday afternoon meeting between the Tennessee Titans and the Minnesota Vikings featured both the NFC and AFC Special-Teams Players of the Month for September: Percy Harvin and Darius Reynaud.
Reynaud had a small part of the offense, catching one pass from Matt Hasselbeck for 17 yards and had one carry for 8 yards.
On special teams, Reynaud had two kick returns for a 30.5-yard average and to punt returns for 12.5 per return.
The Bears went into Jacksonville and blew out the hapless Jaguars 41-3. J.T. Thomas got in some snaps on defense and got a pressure on QB Blaine Gabbert.
