steve-slaton  The last time Steve Slaton stepped on a football field to play in a game was New Year’s Day in 2012 as a member of the Miami Dolphins. Now, over two and a half years later, he has the opportunity to get back on the field as a member of the Toronto Argonauts on June 9th. And he can’t wait.

At the start of training camp for the 2012 season, the Dolphins tried to send Slaton via trade with the Washington Redskins. When trade talks broke down, the team released Slaton. After that, he had several workouts with teams, but did not land on a roster.

Last month, Slaton signed with the Toronto Argonauts a few weeks after fellow WVU teammate Kent Richardson signed with them. He jumped on TSN 1050 radio last week to discuss signing with the club and talk about his excitement to get back on the field.

“I’m just looking for an opportunity to play football again,” Slaton said.  “I’m happy to come over here and play.”

The CFL style of play is more wide-open than its American counterpart due to the increased size of the field and different rules. With fellow Mountaineers such as Avon Cobourne, Noel Devine and Jock Sanders logging heavy minutes in the CFL, Slaton knows what to expect.

“[I’ve been] keeping up with a lot of guys that I’ve played with that have jumped over to Canada, watching them and supporting them,” he said. “With the wider field you’ve got a lot of space to work with.”

Slaton will get his first chance to join his new teammates when mini-camp begins on May 3rd.
