No. 71 Ben Dunkerley, an offensive tackle for West Virginia in 1951-1952, is the latest player in our Countdown to Kickoff series highlighting some of the greatest players to come through the football program.
He was honored as a 1951 All-Southern Conference First Team selection and a 1952 second team AP All-American. 1952 was also the first winning season for the football program since going 9-3 in 1948.
Even though he was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the 1954 NFL Draft, he went to Germany and served in the United States Army, where he suffered through injury and never played professional football as he choose family over football. Dunkerley would go on to coach midget league football in his hometown of Glassport, Pa.
Dunkerley was honored for his play by being inducted into the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.
