Now that the quarterbacks have completed the 2015 combine analysts are buzzing with their projections on what teams will take Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota. Although it seems likely that Winston will go number one overall to the Buccaneers, Mariota’s destination is a little more cloudy.
Rumors have surfaced regarding the Eagles head coach Chip Kelly’s obsession with making Mariota an Eagle. This has lead to speculation there could be a RG3 level blockbuster draft day trade in the works. The most likely team to be involved in a monster trade sending Mariota to the Eagles would be the New York Jets, who have the sixth pick in the draft.
The Jets could draft Mariota, if he is available, then trade him to Philadelphia. The logical asking price would be the Eagles’ first and second round picks in 2015 and 2016.
The wild card in this scenario is if they throw in Nick Foles. Foles himself has said the team has indicated to him he will not be traded. Of course, if Foles can be used to sweeten a Jets trade for Mariota, Chip Kelly would pay Foles’ tolls himself to ship him up the New Jersey Turnpike to East Rutherford.
What does this mean for Geno Smith? Although he hasn’t received much, if any, votes of confidence from the new Jets coaching staff he still could be very much in the mix to remain the starting quarterback for the Jets in 2015. The Jets could use those additional picks to improve a defense which has a lot of holes and add a play maker or two on offense.
