In our first 2017-18 NFL preview, we take a look at the speedy Mario Alford of the Cleveland Browns.
The Past: Drafted in 2015 by the Cincinnati Bengals, Alford was released by the team prior to the start of the 2016 Regular Season. He then signed onto the Browns’ practice squad before being promoted to the 53-man roster in mid-December.
The Present: Alford is one of 11 receivers entering camp with Cleveland, but is also listed as their primary kickoff returner.
The Future: For players at the end of a team roster, like Alford, one way to make sure they make the final roster is to make themselves as valuable as possible. Alford’s speed gives him the chance to make game-breaking plays as a return man. Going into his third pro season, we know he has spent a lot of time learning to catch kicks. Should he hang on to the ball during kickoffs and make a few plays, both in the return game and catching passes, Alford should find himself on the Browns’ Week 1 roster.
