The Saskatchewan Roughriders are at the top of the CFL after winning the 2013 Grey Cup. Last week, they awarded head coach Corey Chamblin with a contract extension through the 2017 season. Over the weekend, he added another winner to his coaching staff: Avon Cobourne.

Jamie Nye reported the move early Sunday morning. He adds that, “if you’re going to teach a bunch of new RBs how to pass protect in the CFL, Cobourne is a solid choice.”

Cobourne left WVU as it’s all-time leading rusher in yards (5,164), attempts (1,050) and games with 100 yards (28). His pro career began in 2003 as a member of the Detroit Lions before going overseas to play in NFL Europe.

His career took off, however, when he joined the Montréal Alouettes of the CFL in 2006. He played as a RB, kick returned and linebacker. He took over as the starter in 2008 where he was named an East Division All-Star and was third in the league in rushing yards. The following season, he led the Als to a league championship and was named the Grey Cup Most Valuable Player.

In 2012, he played his last season in the CFL with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats where he was named an East Division All-Star for the third time in his career.

Now, Cobourne will start a new chapter in his football career. Known throughout his career as being a fiery competitor, the WVU star look to bring some of that toughness to his new pupils.
