Geno Smith is out to prove that he is the best quarterback in the 2013 NFL Draft this weekend at the Combine. He has the size, the arm, the knowledge and the intangibles that will separate him from the crowd.

While many of the top-tier QB prospects hand-pick which events they will participate in — usually electing not to throw — Smith says he will do everything at the Combine. This highlights two of the aforementioned intangibles: his competitiveness and leadership. After Smith led the way by saying he would take part in all events, Syracuse’s Ryan Nassib announced the same.

The QB that many believe is Smith’s closest competitor in this draft is USC’s Matt Barkley. Barkley will not throw at the Combine due to a shoulder injury, but will throw at his Pro-Day in late March. Tyler Wilson from Arkansas is also in the mix.

When an NFL team selects a quarterback in the first round, they expect that player to be their franchise QB.

“I feel like I am the best, and (given) what I’ve done up until this point, I do have a case for being the No. 1 overall pick,” Smith told USA TODAY Sports at IMG Academy. “It’s up to the GMs and coaches. I have plenty of work to do still as a player and a person. I have to go up to Indianapolis (at the scouting combine) and impress them there.

“I have the capabilities to be a franchise guy. It’s just about exhibiting that.”

Smith has a busy week ahead of him. He will arrive in Indianapolis on Thursday where he will undergo orientation, registration, a hospital pre-exam and x-rays, as well as interviews. On Friday, he will have his measurements taken, have medical exams, will be available to the media and have more team interviews. On Saturday, Smith will attend an NFLPA meeting, have psychological testing, do the bench press and wrap up team interviews. On Sunday, all eyes will be on Smith when he has his on-field workouts before leaving town.

Smith will be one of four players that the NFL Network will follow throughout the weekend for their “Draft Journey”. Features on each player will air over the weekend, during Combine coverage and leading up to the draft at the end of April.

The Kansas City Chiefs hold the first pick in the draft, and their biggest need is at quarterback. Could Smith land in K.C. with the #1 overall pick and make WVU history in doing so? We’ll get a sneak peak this weekend.
