Morgantown, WVa  native Jedd Gyoko’s dream came true today as he made his Major League Baseball regular season début. After working his way up through the San Diego Padres’ minor league system for two years, he started at 2B and batted 5th in the lineup against the Mets. He had a cheering section of about 30 friends and family in attendance.

In his first two at-bats, he grounded out in his first at-bat (video below) and struck out in his second. In the sixth inning, he doubled for his first professional hit. He finished the game going 1-4.

“Obviously, I’m excited for this but I’ve never been a real nervous person,” Gyorko said before the game. “… But I’m sure the butterflies will pop up at some point.”

The Padres fell behind early, as starter Edinson Volquez surrendered six earned runs in just over three innings before departing. They lost the game 11-2.

The two teams take tomorrow off before resuming the series on Wednesday afternoon.
