Will Johnson played in his first game as a pro on Thursday night for the Steelers. He sat out last year after graduating from WVU, but impressed Steelers’ head coach Mike Tomlin enough at WVU’s Pro-Day this past March to earn a contract with the team.

“That was very exciting for me to play Thursday night,” Johnson told us. “Definitely a dream come true!”

He came into the game late in the first quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles after starting FB David Johnson went out with a season-ending knee injury.

He played well, and found himself open for passes out of the backfield and made some key blocks near the goal line on a Steelers touchdown drive. He had a nice game for his début, but now he might be called upon to start with David Johnson out for the year.  So far, the Steelers have not addressed the hole at starting fullback.

“I think for my first NFL game I did OK. I could clean up some technical things, but it will come with reps,” he said, alluding to a possible increased role.

“We play them [the Eagles] again in season, so it should be a good one.”

The Steelers play the Colts next Sunday night on NBC. It will be Johnson’s first time in front of a national audience as a pro.

“I’m excited to get back to the drawing board.”
