Larry Ford Recovers a Fumble Against Lakeland

We told you last week that Larry Ford signed with the San Antonio Talons of the AFL. He had previously played for the Florida Tarpons and Kentucky Drillers of the UIFL.

The Talons are now the #1 team in the AFL Power Rankings after clinching the Central Division Championship with a 13-3 record (followed closely by Kent Richardson’s Philadelphia Soul). The Talons have two regular season games remaining after clinching at least one home playoff game.

This is a big step in a former Mountaineer’s career as he has his eye set on the NFL. We spoke with Ford yesterday about joining the team, what the differences are between the AFL and UIFL, and who he has received advice from.

WVUPros: How does it feel to be a member of the Talons?

Larry Ford: If feels good. It’s a blessing to get brought on to a team of this caliber who sitting in #1 spot and has the chance to win a championship.

WVUPros: How do you like your new teammates and coaches?

Ford: The players and coaches are very good guys, and I’m learning a lot from these older guys by just practicing and trying to learn the system.

WVUPros: Do you think you’ll get to play this weekend?

Ford: It’s a possibility.  If I don’t play this week then hopefully next week, but I enjoy learning and getting better every week at practice.  I’m just patiently waiting my turn. I’m the only extra D-lineman we got. [The team] likes me a lot and the coaching staff wants to see me on the field.

WVUPros: Behind the scenes, describe the difference between the UIFL and AFL. How they are ran and organized?

Ford: The AFL is way better established and organized then the UIFL. The biggest difference is the level of competition. The AFL is more competitive and a lot faster than the UIFL.

WVUPros: Are there any former Mountaineers you’ve gotten advice from on your journey?

Ford: Julian Miller, Will Johnson, Bruce Irvin, Scooter Berry just to name a few. They always tell me God has a plan for me and, as of now,  it’s really paying off.
