Week 16 of the NFL season saw the Playoff picture become clearer. Some NFL records fell. Cam Newton of the Panthers broke a 14-year old record; Drew Brees broke Dan Marino’s single-season passing record. The Detroit Lions clinched a Playoff spot, becoming the 4th NFC team to qualify for the Playoffs. With the Falcon’s loss to the Saints on Monday night, one of the Wildcard slots in the NFC are still open.
For former Mountaineers, Brandon Hogan had a career first. Adam Jones and Ryan Mundy had good games. What did some other Mountaineers do, and who are two that could play in the Pro-Bowl? Find out below in the rundown of Week 16 games involving West Virginia Mountaineers.
Texans 16- Colts 19
The Colts won their 2nd game of the season, 2nd in a row, to the Playoff bound Texans. Pat McAfee had 5 punts for a 41.8 yard average with 2 of them inside the 20-yard-line. If the Colts lose next week to the Jaguars, they are assured of the #1 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. Pat McAfee has been one of the Colts best players. He leads the team in special teams tackles, and has more tackles than any other kicker or punter in the league. He is 4th in the AFC in overall punting.
Tampa Bay 16 – Carolina 48
Rookie Cam Newton made headlines in this game as he broke Peyton Manning’s rookie passing yards record. Another rookie for the Panthers had a career first as well. Brandon Hogan recorded his 1st career tackle in the game.
Cardinals 16 – Bengals 23
The Bengals won a pivotal game against the Cardinals setting up a win-and-they’re-in the Playoffs scenario for Week 17. Adam Jones recorded 5 tackles and broke up two passes. Robert Sands was inactive.
Raiders 16 – Chiefs 13
The Raiders defeated the Chiefs in overtime. Anthony Becht played the most offensive snaps for the Chiefs being in the game on 60 plays. He was mainly used as a blocker, but had 1 catch for 6 yards.
Dolphins 24 – Patriots 27
Steve Slaton was inactive for the Dolphins. He has played only 20 snaps for the team since the Dolphins picked him up off waivers during the middle of the season after his release from Houston. Slaton is a free-agent after this season. As this team rebuilds with Reggie Bush and Daniel Thomas, Slaton might find himself in a position after the season to choose where he plays next.
Rams 0 – Steelers 27
Ryan Mundy saw the bulk of his action late in the game after the Steelers pulled Troy Polamalu. Mundy recorded 6 tackles in the game. Mortty Ivy played on special teams, but did not record any tackles.
Vikings 33 – Redskins 26
Chris Neild was on the field for 10 defensive plays, but did not record any tackles or sacks.
Eagles 20 – Cowboys 7
Owen Schmitt’s place on the Eagles is mostly as a blocker for LeSean McCoy. He is not leading the voting among fullbacks in the NFC to make the Pro-Bowl. He could get selected by coaches because he has helped block the way for McCoy and the Eagles to be one of the top rushing teams in the League.
