The MLS just wrapped up their third week of the season. The Union’s record stands at 3-1 thus far, and the West Virginia soccer star Gaddis has been a big reason for their early success. They dropped their first match of the season this past weekend when the faced the Columbus Crew.
Gaddis’ play helped control the second half for the Union, leading to Sports Illustrated naming him to their Planet Futbol MLS Best XI: Week 3.
The initial ball on Leo Fernandes’ goal for the Philadelphia Union on Saturday came off Gaddis’ foot, overlapping down the right flank. He made some important defensive stops, including on speedy Crew forward Dominic Oduro to keep it a one-goal game. Although the Union lost narrowly, Gaddis’ attack-minded play helped Philadelphia control most of the second half.
The Crew played a solid game, taking advantage of two early mistakes by the Union. Despite playing a strong second half, the Union couldn’t score any goals off of a few opportunities.
One bright spot in the game was Gaddis. In the 2-1 loss, the Union’s lone goal came when Gaddis started a flurry of shots on goal with a shot that deflected off a Crew defender before ultimately being put in by Leo Fernandes.
On being named to the Team of the Week, Gaddis said, “This is a major blessing and honor. It’s just going to push me to stay humble and hardworking as ever.”
The Union next play on Saturday against Montreal at 4:00 pm ET.
