Steve Slaton scores twice in Argos preseason opener

Steve Slaton makes a statement in his quest to start at running back for the Toronto Argonauts. He, along with fellow WVUPro Kent Richardson, made their CFL debuts on Monday night in a 24-22 win against Winnipeg in the CFL preseason opener.

The Argonauts’ former starting RB, Chad Kackert, retired during the offseason, leaving opening job available for several contenders. On Monday night, Slaton’s versatility showed as he had one 13-yard TD scamper on the ground in the first half, and caught a pass in the flat and carried it 15 yards for another score.

Slaton played in his first professional game since playing in a preseason game in 2012 for the Miami Dolphins. He was out of football last season before getting a chance to play for the Argonauts.

Although pleased with the victory and his performance, Slaton knows there is still work to do before the regular season opens in two weeks.

“Everybody is competing for jobs,” he said after the game.

In the game, Slaton had three carries for 19 yards and one TD and two receptions for 23 yards and a touchdown. Kent Richardson did not break into the stat sheet.

The Argonauts do not play again until Thursday June 19th for the last preseason game against Hamilton. They open the regular season the following Thursday against Winnipeg.
