53bb4bc3ecf45415a1ad975919a0630113ed55d9Our player countdown to West Virginia’s Chick-fil-A Kickoff season opener against Alabama continues with No. 95 defensive end Delbert Fowler, who played for the Mountaineer from 1977 through 1980.

West Virginia would fail to have a winning record in this period of time, and only reach a .500 record of 6-6 in Don Nehlen’s first of what would be 21 years as coach.

Fowler’s 345 total tackles in his four seasons for West Virginia lands himself at No. 10 on the all-time list for the stat category. You can add career marks being No. 8 all-time with 30 tackles for loss and 17 sacks, No. 11 with 212 solo tackles and No. 18 with 133 tackle assists.

In his best game for West Virginia, Fowler would collect 12 tackles, 10 solo, and a fumble recovery in a 24-17 loss to Pittsburgh in Morgantown, the 72nd edition of the Backyard Brawl.

“Treetop” would be drafted by the Houston Oilers in the fifth round of the 1981 NFL Draft, but had his most success during his time in the Canadian Football League. He would be named a 1983 CFL All-Star with the Montreal Concordes, and was a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ two Grey Cup Championships in 1984 and 1988.
