WVUPros Summer Preview: Will Johnson

Will Johnson has been the best viable option for the Pittsburgh Steelers at fullback in the past few seasons. He doens’t run the ball often but he blocks and catches passes out of the backfield. Will his role increase this season?

2013 Season Recap: Johnson didn’t have a single carry in 2013 but he caught eight passes for 41 yards and a touchdown. He also made seven stops on special teams. While his numbers decreased from the previous season, the Steelers have yet to say anything but positive things about the Mountaineer.

Contract: In 2012, Johnson signed a three-year, $1.44 million deal with Pittsburgh. He’ll make $570,000 in 2014 and be a restricted free agent in 2015.

Summer OTAs Outlook: As teams begin to eliminate the fullback position, Johnson will be using this offseason to prove why he’s still the best option for the Steelers at this position. It wouldn’t be a stretch to see him line up at tight end, either, which he did often for WVU. Not much has been said out of Steelers camp about the future plans for Johnson but as the offseason picks up, look for him to start making an impact.

2014 Season Outlook: Johnson will resume his fullback role but keep an eye on him on special teams. Though he’s a fullback by trade, he showed last season that he can get out and make tackles on the opposite side of things. That could prove his worth to the Steelers as his contract will be coming up soon.
