We find one of the best two-players on both the West Virginia offensive and defensive lines with No. 72, Gene Lamone, as our Countdown to Kickoff inches closer to the Mountaineers’ season opener against the Alabama Crimson Tide in Atlanta.
Lamone, who was nicknamed “Beef” at West Virginia, was a 1953 second-team All-American and a 1954 third-team All-American by the Associated Press and selected to play in the East-West All-Star Game that same year. In the 1955 NFL Draft, Lamone was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles and moved on to the Cleveland Browns two years later before retiring from football all together the very next year.
An induction into the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame came to Lamone as part of the class of 1995 with fellow football players, Danny Buggs and Garrett Ford.
You can find all of our past selections in our countdown to this point from No. 100 through No. 73 here on WVUPros.com.
