We are 96 days away from the West Virginia Mountaineers kicking off their season against the Alabama Crimson Tide. Representing the No. 96 is one of the best defensive linemen in WVU history: John Thornton!
Hailing from Scottdale, PA, Thornton played for the Mountaineers from 1995-1998. He was a three-year starter on the defensive line at defensive tackle. He was named to the All-Big East Team in 1997 and 1998 and earned All-American honors as a senior. He had 162 tackles and 15 sacks in his college career.
He went on to get drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the 1999 NFL Draft and helped them win the AFC Championship Game during his rookie season. He went on to play 10 seasons in the NFL with the Titans and Cincinnati Bengals. He compiled 303 tackles and 27.5 sacks during his career before retiring in 2008.
Thornton is still heavily involved in football, being an NFLPA Certified Agent at Jockbiz Sports which he co-owns with fellow Mountaineer Charles Fisher. Thornton also co-hosts a radio show in Cincinnati as well as color analyst for Root Sports.
Tomorrow, No. 95 on our countdown was Fifth Round NFL Draft pick who went on to earn All-Star honors in the CFL.
