Rod Thorn named to important position with the Washington Wizards

One of WVU Basketball’s legendary greats takes on another prestigious NBA front-office role.

The Wizards named Thorn as a senior advisor to the general manager this week. He will consult with Wizards GM Tommy Sheppard on personnel, draft picks, free agency, and other basketball operations matters.

Thorn brings over 40 years of front office experience to the newly-created role. He previously served as a general manager for the Bulls, Nets, and 76ers and was the chairman of the Dream Team until 2000.

Thorn was the #2 overall pick for the Baltimore Bullets in the 1963 NBA Draft and was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.

The Mountaineers have a strong contingency of members with front office roles. Jerry West has been behind 8 Championship teams and two Executive of the Year Awards. Mike Gansey is an assistant GM with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and Jonnie West is the Golden State Warriors Director of Basketball Operations (and married to LPGA golfer Michelle Wie).
