WVU Players in the NFL

Shocker: Seattle cuts Geno Smith

Written by Caleb Wygal

This one is a surprise.

UPDATE: Seattle re-signed Geno Smith

The NFL deadline to get down to 53 players on the roster expired at 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday. Announcements of cut players still trickle out after the deadline.

Perhaps the most surprising cut I’ve seen in my seven years of doing WVUPros came today when the Seattle Seahawks cut Geno Smith.

He had seemingly beat out Paxton Lynch to backup Russell Wilson. The team released Lynch yesterday.

Now Seattle is down to just Wilson at QB while Smith will search for a new team. With many moves made around the league today at quarterback, odds are Smith won’t be a free-agent for long.

This article will be updated as I receive more details.

Update 8:25 PM

One of my readers, Dean Devic, passed this along to me.

This makes rings correct due to the team pulling off a big trade for Jadeveon Clowney today. Smith had also been tweeting out images and videos supporting the team throughout the day.

Update 8:42 PM

Twitter follower Shon Sbarra sent me this a few minutes ago. Sounds good for Smith unless Seattle looks elsewhere.
