Tuesday morning brought a surprise at Carolina Panthers’ practice: the absence of Cam Newton. If he’s unable to play this weekend, Will Grier will likely be activated for the first time in his career.
Cam Newton played in one game during the Preseason, but left it with a foot injury. He missed the exhibition finale (but then again, most starting quarterbacks were in street clothes in the fourth game) with the injury, but was cleared to play in Week 1. The Panthers have started the season 0-2, and Newton has looked like a shadow of his former MVP self. He has been the most inaccurate passer in the NFL the first two weeks, with over 30% of his passes being deemed uncatchable.
He also hasn’t run the ball, which is what kept defenses on their toes in previous years. He missed practice on Tuesday because he reaggravated his foot injury, according to head coach Ron Rivera.
That would mean that Will Grier would dress as a backup to Allen and be Active for the first time in the Regular Season during his young career.
Cam Newton missed practice again on Wednesday, so it looks increasingly like he will not play, meaning Grier will suit up.
